Q-CH4 , NH3 & H2O have same geometry tetrahedral but why they differ it's shape?
Ans- CH4 , NH3 & H2O compound have SP³ hybridisation, so their geometry is tetrahedral .
Geometry depends upon total bond pair and lone pair available in given compound but shape of any compound depends upon its bond pair available in given compound.
Here we see the Lewis structure of CH4
In CH4 there are 4 bond pair and no lone pair so it's shape is tetrahedral.
Lewis structure of NH3
In NH3 there is 3bond pair& 1lone pair available,so it's shape is piramidal.
In H2O, there is 2 bond pair and 2 lone pair available.so it's shape is Bent or Angular.
